Drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg (approximately 50 km, 1.5 hours). Gulmarg is one of the best destinations in India for families with children — wide open snow-covered meadows, beginner ski slopes in season, and the Gondola cable car that children remember for years.
Phase 1 reaches Kongdoori at about 2,650 metres and suits all ages, including grandparents. Phase 2 climbs near 3,980 metres for older kids and adults who are comfortable with height. In the snow months, the play areas near the meadow base are easy for little ones and elders who prefer level ground.
In season (November to April), snow play areas near the meadow base are accessible without the Gondola, making them ideal for young children and elders who prefer to stay on the lower ground. Pony rides around the meadow are another family favourite at this stop.
Drive to Pahalgam (about 140 km, 3.5 hours via Srinagar), passing the saffron fields of Pampore on the way. Pahalgam, at 2,130 metres, is probably the most family-friendly stop of all. The Lidder River runs gently through town, the air is cool and clean, and the valleys are flat enough for every age group. Betaab Valley is an easy, pretty walk; Aru Valley is the quieter version of it.
Betaab Valley (named after a 1983 Bollywood film) is an easy family walk with green meadows and a riverside setting. Aru Valley offers a more remote, quieter version of the same landscape. Both are good options for families with children who enjoy outdoor spaces without strenuous hiking.
Drive back to Srinagar (approximately 95 km, 2.5 hours). The morning in Pahalgam is free — a walk along the Lidder riverbank, a late breakfast, or time for children to enjoy the hotel grounds before checkout.
On arrival in Srinagar, the afternoon is open for the old city markets — Lal Chowk, Polo View Market, and the handicraft lanes for Kashmiri shawls, dry fruits, papier-mâché items, and saffron.
